Member of Perennial Speaker Panel (a Gardeners Charity) & owner of Alan Mason Garden Design. Alan has been a popular speaker for many years, with his own light-hearted style and wonderful anecdotes appealing to gardeners and non-gardeners alike. He is now part of the garden management team at Chatsworth House, where he leads on training and development

We have more old survivors of ancient trees than the rest of northern Europe put together. This is reckoned down to the history and age of our country and because of our medieval history. At Our AGM 18th November, we have Professor Tony Ryan, founding Director of the Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures. His Talk title is "Gardening the Desert", How do you help people feed themselves in large refugee camps in the middle of a desert where the soil is salty and low in organic matter and water is scarce? Hear how Tony and his team came across a warehouse full of answers and a groundbreaking project was born.

Simon Croson: Talking on plant hunting around the world
I’ve been lucky enough to travel around many places through my time in the RAF and take opportunities to find, study and photograph plants. My fascination for wildlife was fuelled by growing up in the Nottinghamshire countryside. I’ve been lucky enough to visit America, New Zealand, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Cyprus and several Greek islands, Nepal (several times), Sikkim and Ascension Island most of which was to study wildlife and specifically plants, my talk is accompanied by my photographs to hopefully inspire a closer look at the places we may be lucky to visit once again.

Julie Ritchie: Talk on Plants for Awkward Places
Julie Ritchie trained as a Landscape Architect and designed and built gardens with her husband Robin until 1986 when the lack of good perennials and alpines to source for those gardens prompted a move to Hoo House just outside Tewkesbury in the north of Gloucestershire to start the nursery.
Around 850 varieties are produced for sale, many of which are propagated at the nursery and since 2001 it has all been done using peat-free compost.
Specialities include geraniums, penstemons and saxifrage.
20th May - Don Witton, Vibrant Summer Perennials
A school teacher by profession and I am a self-taught horticulturist and plantsman with a passion for perennials in general and euphorbias in particular, holding a National Collection of hardy Euphorbias which has been featured in numerous national gardening publications and appeared on BBC 2’s Gardeners’ World twice. I run a small nursery, specialising in hardy perennials and lecture extensively all over the country offering over 20 talk titles. The talk ‘Vibrant Summer Perennials’ looks at some of the more colourful and exciting herbaceous perennials which are in flower from June to the end of August.

Apple Day is a nation-wide celebration of apples and orchards, and we were delighted to celebrate it in Baslow again in 2017, Location, the “amenity ground” just off Over Lane. Things to look for Apple pressing, Ask a man who knows, bring your apple to identify it. Childrens games, Produce stalls and food.
The Garden Society will be having a stall selling plants, so please could members save and bring along any unwanted plants (seedlings, perennials that have been divided, unloved house plants etc!). If you can’t get to the event, you can bring them to Ivy House ( and other venues?) and I’ll see that they get to the stall.
We would also appreciate any volunteers to man the stall for an hour or so. Please contact any member of the committee if you can help.

Based at Thoresby Park Nottingham, Linda and Ray have a passion for all varieties of Echium, holding the national collection many of which are hardy. Linda will talk about the various Echium flowers including the giant tree Echium, Echium Pininana, which grows well at Thoresby. Who knows, some of which you might consider growing an Echium to give your garden the added "Wow" factor.

Byron is a documentary maker, writer, professional lecturer and geography teacher from the Staffordshire Moorlands. Byron is a keen Botanist and Entomologist who loves his subject with a passion. The talk will be about the numerous rare and beautiful orchids found in the peak district: not only looking at their natural history but also their folklore, distribution and future.
18th April 2019 Ed Shaw Expedition in China
Plants, Travel and Change in South-West China
The Hengduan Mountains in South-West China has one of the world’s richest temperate floras. In this talk Ed will recount highlights and experiences from two expeditions to the region, as well as reflect on the rapid environmental change that is occurring.
Ed has broad interests in natural history and environmental science. He is currently the Director of the Don Catchment Rivers Trust, a charity dedicated to enhancing the ecological condition of the rivers and streams of the Don Catchment (which covers most of South Yorkshire). He has a particular interest in the plants of South- West China that developed while accompanying his now wife to visit her family in Sichuan Province, and discovering for himself the fascinating biodiversity and history of botanic exploration of the region.

In 1998 Catherine studied and gain a general certificate in horticulture from the rhs. 10 years later a heart condition affecting her long term partner forced a change in lives and work and diet became paramount.
Her gardening knowledge came to the rescue. Within a short period of time they had created a substantial vegetable and herb garden and with the surplus we started a vegetable box scheme. From their their business grew.

About 10 years ago Lesley and Dave Robinson decided to combine their love of arty activities with their love of wildlife. They run a small animal rescue called Our Back Yard for wild birds and hedgehogs. This means that the arty activities help to support this.

16th JAN 2020 Garden Design Phil Hirst: RHS Gold medal winner, gives us some tips.
Owner of an award winning garden design practice based in Sheffield and working throughout Yorkshire, Derbyshire and the rest of the UK. Gardens are their passion. From a small courtyard to a country estate they have the vision, skills and experience to design the garden space you dream of.
Their work has been recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society with a gold medal and ‘Best Show Garden’ at the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show in 2018 and a gold medal and ‘Best Large Garden’ award at the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show in 2013. Our work has also featured on BBC TV and radio and in magazines including Gardens Illustrated, The Garden Design Journal and Modern Gardens.
